If you're getting Blue Screens saying "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" (NETDLWL.SYS) when using D-Links DWL-510 Wireless LAN PCI Card together with Windows XP Professional, it's because the
people at D-Link don't know how to write drivers. Until they have received some coachings on how to write drivers, here's a workaround (use at your own risk), thanks to the people from realtek who produced the chipset used on the DWL-510
and know how to write drivers.
Follow these 5 steps and you should be up and running:
- Install the D-Link normally, with D-Link driver and software
- Go to realtek's download site and download the driver
- Unpack the driver and edit the file NET8180.INF with a normal text editor: replace VEN_10EC with VEN_1186 (6 replacements) then replace SUBSYS_818010EC with SUBSYS_33001186 (2 replacements)
- Go to Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> Network adapters and right-click your D-Link card to go to properties. Select Driver then Update Driver... and choose Have Disk and enter the location of your edited NET8180.INF
- Reboot your computer
Since you're using windows XP, you shouldn't need to do anything else and see a
"REaltek RTL8180 Wireles LAN (Mini-)PCI NIC" instead of your DWL 510. To configure your network (WEP, etc.) you would just choose your Wireless Connetion in
My Network Places -> Properties.
If this still doesn't work or you don't have Windows XP Professional, I hope you know german! Theres a
thread about this issue in the german D-Link Support Forum (thanks,
Athne ;)).
Can somebody second this with Windows XP Home?
