Välkommen!
Got junk in the trunk!

This is the trunk of my car, filled with food for the next ten days. Let's see if it's the right amount. See you all in a while, I'm off to Sweden :-)
NFS: Debian-Server and Darwin-Client experiment
I've never really used NFS before. So I decided to give it a go on my new debian server. After installing openvpn both on the server and the client I of course needed to put the nfs stuff onto my server. Installed nfs-common and nfs-user-server, tweaked /etc/defaults/portmap to bind the portmapper to one ip, adjustet /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/exports and watched the syslog while trying to connect:
Aug 15 02:13:50 ffm-root58 mountd[30063]: NFS mount of / attempted from 10.2.0.6
Aug 15 02:13:50 ffm-root58 mountd[30063]: / has been mounted by 10.2.0.6
Aug 15 02:13:50 ffm-root58 nfsd[30061]: NFS request from eisenuschi originated on insecure port, psychoanalysis suggested
Semi-True. A psychoanalysis might be a good thing, but / hasn't really been mounted by 10.2.0.6:
Eisenuschi:~ root# mount 10.2.0.1 test
mount_nfs: bad MNT RPC: RPC: Timed out
Not mounted. Alright. Adding "insecure" to the /etc/exports entry fixed this. Server mounted, Jannis happy. I then asked google about tips on how to map uids between server and client, when darwin assured me, that it's nfs-implementation is more broken than working (click to enlarge):
Where's my remote debugger? Samba, here I come!
Mighty mighty, go, go!
I spent this week with my girlfriend in Nürnberg. Apart from doing many nice things, we went to the movies and checked out Die Insel - a pretty nice movie. But did you notice this too: Scarlett Johansson's face was vertically split into two parts. While her left cheek looked picture perfect (in a photoshop kind of way), the other one looked like that of a normal human being. Was that some metaphor I didn't get, or just a make-up artist having a bad day?

So anyways, why am I awake for one hour at a saturday morning at 8:14? I'm in a bit of a hurry. I need to move the rest of the stuff that is still residing on the backup server to the new one ASAP, as Bill Lumbergh from Office Space (haven't seen this movie? You definitely missed one of the best movies since 1999) would say. Apart from that, I have to make some preparations today, as the stores are closed on sunday (and next monday, too). Huh? Preparations? What for?

Traveling! Unlike last year and the year before , we'll probably not go to italy this time. Signs point to sweden. Tine and Michi, friends of my girlfriend, will go to sweden in a few days, and probably we're going to join them. It's gonna be ten days of camping and exploring sweden. I've never been there before, so I'm really prying to see what it's like ...
But thats not all! I've booked a flight to California (everybody needs a good tan) yesterday. I'll be paying Sterling a visit in San Francisco (San Mateo, to be precise) on September 2nd. Somewhat a spontaneously purchased ticket, but hey... It is however not only going to be recreation, as I am also planning to have a look at some universities there and talk to some people to get a better feel on where I could stay some time after finishing university.
By the way: I am writing this using apple's new mighty mouse (yes, using a keyboard, too). It's actually pretty damn nice and the 360° scroll wheel ball feels so much better than a normal mousewheel, but there are some things to note about it:
- Why do the side buttons only make that "click" sound when it's plugged in?
- Why does the middle mouse button not work (as in "open link in a new tab") in Firefox, but in Safari?
- Does it have difficulties recognizing a right click, while the index finger is resting on the mouse, or is that just me?
- Why are scroll speeds so different in different applications?
- Why is there no bluetooth version? A wired mouse in 2005? Come on!
- It's still neat.
Alright, that's it for now, and don't expect anything new here from tuesday until ten days later. All work nature and no play computers make Jannis a dull offline boy... ;)
PAX Augsburg 2005

I took this snapshot of the Rathaus Augsburg with my cellphone (you can see that, eh) today at PAX 2005.
